Summer Enrichment and Camp Programs from One of the Best Schools in America!

BASIS Independent Summer is a great opportunity for students of all ages to experience a wide range of physical, educational, and recreational activities. This summer we are excited to witness students making new friends, creating memories, and growing to improve their skills and knowledge in a variety of areas.

Summer Program Basics

  • Open to both BASIS Independent and non-BASIS Independent students entering grades K - 6 in the fall of 2017 
  • Various programming offered from June 12-July 21 with full day or a half day (morning or afternoon) options for many programs:
    • Full day: 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM
      • All courses offered by Techsplosion conclude at 4:00PM
    • Morning half day: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
    • Afternoon half day: 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM
  • All BASIS staff led programs adhere to the following format:
    • Summer Session I (June 12th – June 23rd)
    • Summer Session II (June 26th – July 7th) *Please note that there will be no school on July 3rd and July 4th
    • Summer Session III (July 10th – July 21st)
  • Choose a combination of Summer Sessions and/or 1-week options!
  • In the event of low enrollment, programs are subject to cancellation
  • Early-bird/Late-bird service (before/after care)
    • Early-bird will run from 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM (free for all enrolled students)
    • Late-bird will run from 3:30 PM – 6:00 PM with a $15 fee per day or $60 flat fee per week
    • Enrolled students may drop into Early-bird. However, Late-bird requires pre-registration and advance payment

Registration

Registration closes March 31st. After March 31st, you may still register for the summer programs with remaining available spaces or be wait-listed for programs with full capacity. Click on the REGISTER button to select and pay for your programs using our quick and easy online registration system.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

All fees are due at the time of registrations. Any cancellations or withdrawals before May 1, 2017 are subject to a $50 cancellation fee. After May 1, 2017, program fees are completely non-refundable under any and all circumstances and cannot be transferred to another session or another student. This includes, but is not limited to, absence(s), withdrawal before the end of the program, and disruptive behavior or other misconduct.

All Day Summer Offerings

Junior Chemistry

For students entering grades K–2

In this hands-on and engaging science program, students will discover seemingly miraculous chemical reactions with everyday house hold items. Through these experiments, students will grow to understand the three states of matter (solid, liquid, gas). Although this is a beginning chemistry program, these students will certainly emerge feeling like mini masters of this scientific field!

Leadership & Improv Camp

For students entering grades 3–6

Do you like to think outside the box? Do you enjoy exploring your creativity? Come join the Leadership and Improv camp where you will develop team building skills, problem solving techniques, and enhance your public speaking abilities. Each day will include a mix of improvisation games, leadership opportunities, and one on one coaching. This camp will conclude in a final showcase reflecting the leadership and improvisation skills that the students learn throughout the two weeks. The final showcase will be open to friends and family to attend.

Junior Archaelogists

For students entering grades K–2

Take a trip back in time with this summer course! During this science program, students will gain understanding of prehistoric dinosaurs. Students will also discover the different types of dinosaurs and what caused them to go extinct. We will create our own fossils, go on a fossil dig, and even create dinosaurs. How, you ask?! You will have to sign up to see!

Creative Writing

For students entering 2nd grade

Words are a powerful tool we use to communicate ideas, share expressions, and offer appreciations. In this writing class, we will focus on techniques that will enhance each students creative writing skills. We will learn some conventional tips that will help you begin your thought processes and explore concepts to enhance your philosophical and/or logical view. Last, but not least, we will learn methods to recognize our physical and emotional attributes so that we can express a better sense of self-awareness in our writing. This course is designed to help each scholar increase their self-confidence in the art of creative writing.

Reading Investigators

For students entering grades 3–6

In this class, students will collaborate in small groups to discuss literature elements in a variety of readings. Students will begin the session by reading short stories and poems to become familiar with different styles of writing. Afterwards, students will be able to select a novel from Ms. Villanueva’s selection of books to read and learn how to summarize a story. By the end of the session, students will create a unique book report project about their novel and present their work to their peers.

Ocean Explorers

For students entering grades 3–6

Step into our marine laboratory where we will be exploring the wonders of the ocean. In this 2 week long summer course, students will get a feel for what it is like to be Oceanographers, Marine Biologists and Environmentalists. As scientists, they will learn about the organisms that live in the ocean, what life is like in the ocean and how we can protect it!

Kinder Readiness - Morning Option

For students entering Kindergarten

Participation in the Kindergarten readiness program aims to focus on reading via phonics, introduction to writing, comprehension and most importantly, facilitates long-term retention. This, in turn, instills confidence in students as they begin the academic year after summer. The goal of the Summer Kindergarten Readiness Program is to increase access to quality programming prior to kindergarten as well as to alleviate the learning gap that research shows traditionally occurs over the summer months.

Kinder Readiness - Afternoon Option

For students entering Kindergarten

This is a Kindergarten Readiness program designed to make students more independent and comfortable in their upcoming Kindergarten class. During this program, we will emphasize phonics and math using songs, drills and interactive plays. We will focus on how to follow directions specifically for kindergarten success while improving social and emotional behaviors. We will develop small motor skills, such as printing, cutting, coloring and other activities and work on laying a strong phonics foundation. Additionally, our young mathematicians will have fun counting, sorting and building different objects as they are introduced to basic math through games.

First Grade Readiness - Afternoon Option

For students entering 1st grade

The fundamental goal for the Summer First Grade Readiness program is to reinforce and retain what they have already learned. Students will be encouraged to read and write, thereby assisting them for a smooth transition into first grade. Primary focus will be on grammar, reading comprehension and writing.

First Grade Readiness - Morning Option

For students entering 1st grade

This is a First Grade Readiness Program designed around enjoyable weekly themes. This program develops their natural curiosity, critical and logical thinking, and language and math skills. We will also explore natural wonders and how things work through indoor and outdoor activities. Our language and phonics sessions will include working with more irregular vowel families and developing reading fluency and reading comprehension. Our math sessions will highlight addition/subtraction using math games, problem solving skills, and hands-on group activities.

Lead and Exceed Team Sports Camp

For students entering grades 3–6

Come join us this summer as we explore popular team sports such as soccer, basketball, football, and more! Participants will take daily trips to Lake Elizabeth where we will not only practice crucial sport-specific skills, but also learn to emerge as team leaders as we compete in regular tournaments. Stay active this summer and get an extra edge over the competition with strategic lessons for each of our sports in this year’s Lead and Exceed Team Sports Camp!

Writer's Workshop

For students entering grades K–6

This class will focus on bringing the fundamentals of grammar and writing to life! In addition to studying the parts of speech, students will learn how to incorporate grammar into their own creative writing assignments. Students will have a variety of writing prompts to choose from and will also practice public speaking skills by presenting final drafts to classmates at the end of the week. By the end of the session, students will have a strong familiarity with commonly used grammar terms and develop a more confident demeanor in speech.

Fit for Fun, Fit for Life

For students entering grades 3–6

Stay in shape the fun way this summer! The Fit for Fun, Fit for Life program is based on learning the necessary components of a fit and healthy lifestyle such as proper exercise techniques, nutrition, basic first-aid skills, as well as the science behind exercise. This course will teach exercises through fun games and participants will learn how to create healthy lifestyles for themselves through interactive nutritional demonstrations. Have a blast and increase your positive self-image at this summer’s Fit for Fun, Fit for Life program!

Game Design

For students entering grades 1–6

In this course, students will learn how to design their own games. The students will learn about the creative process of inventing a game, and will practice building their own games. The intention of the course is to have fun, create projects that students are proud of, and practice thinking creatively. This course will cover various types of games, including outdoor, tabletop, and computer games. We will be learning the foundational skills of computer programming to be able to design games on the computer. The goal is that students see the abundance of opportunities around them to be inventive, from designing computer games to creating a game with only paper and a pencil.

Minecraft Challenge

For students entering grades 2–6

Spawn into the curious world of Minecraft! Learn the fundamentals of video game design as you create epic worlds with the help of your fellow campers and powerful tools like WorldEdit. Learn to make awesome screencasts like your favorite YouTubers, and during free time, compete in Minecraft Hunger Games, Sky Wars, and more! This is the Minecraft summer camp you’ve been waiting for!

Junior Minecraft

For students entering grades 1 & 2

Come explore the world of Minecraft with us! Junior Minecrafters will have tons of fun as they learn the basics of the world famous game. We’ll learn about the different game modes, how to craft some crazy contraptions, and even build an awesome house together! In between sessions of computer time, we’ll do other fun Minecraft stuff like papercraft, a Minecraft skit, outdoor games, and on Friday, a Minecraft potluck party!

Xtreme Minecraft

It’s time to take your craft to the next level! We’ll learn the basics of coding mods using Java and Eclipse IDE, and dive deep into video production and game design concepts. We’ll focus on what makes great games, screencasts and mods great, and learn to use a variety of powerful tools to help make our ideas a reality.
